Harford Emergency Officials Warn of Freezing Rain, Icy Roads

The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory for Harford County, effective from 6 a.m. to noon on Sunday, meaning rain will freeze upon making contact with the ground, causing travel difficulties.

Roads and bridges across Harford County became slippery and icy when temperatures dropped below freezing late Saturday afternoon, according to the Harford County Department of Emergency Services.

After responding to 14 crashes between 3 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday—including one involving a rescue, two with reported injuries and 11 that caused property damage—the department issued a statement cautioning drivers to reduce their speeds and increase vigilance given the conditions.

"As roads refreeze, motorists must reduce speed, keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of them and exercise caution," Emergency Manager Rick Ayers said. "Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through at least mid-day Sunday, which can adversely affect driving conditions."

The National Weather Service reported that freezing rain was most likely in the mid to late morning on Sunday, changing to regular rain by the afternoon.

Harford County's public works employees would begin treating roads at 7 a.m. Sunday, according to the Department of Emergency Services.
